The signal coming from the car stereo through the RCA preamp outputs is vital that its optimal if you are after sound quality. If you have a weak or poor signal coming from the RCA outputs from the headunit, the amplifier will have to work extra harder to produce a sound. This is because you will then have to turn up the gain on the amp higher and it can make your overheat quicker. Having RCA outputs that have a high voltage around 4 to 5 volts will make the sound more cleaner and louder. If you have a stock radio with a RCA converter box or an aftermarket stereo with poor quality RCA outputs, you can attach an external equalizer to fix weak output. This is an separate device that increase the volts from the signal coming from the car headunit RCA's leads and provides you with three high voltage RCA outputs to connect external amplifiers to. It also allows you to control the entire graphic frequency band range so you can fine tune your system for peaks.
1) You will need to connect the car equalizer to a source of power in order for it to be operational. In most cases you will find three wires on the back of it. Black being ground, yellow being 12 volts and blue being remote turn on. You can jumper these wires on the back of your car stereo, so that way when you switch your car CD player on, the equalizer will also switch on at the same time.
2) Now you need to provide the RCA signal into the external equalizer sound processor. On the back of the stereo you will see a pair called 'Preamp output'. You need one small double ended RCA leads to connect into the plugs. Remember to match the colors up as you don't want to reverse the channels the other way around.
3) Now look at the back of the equalizer, you will see an RCA connection labelled as input, plug the RCA cable coming from the headunit into these plugs. Now it will be able to process the music as the stereo is providing a signal to it.
4) All you need to do now is connect your car amps. On the back of the equalizer you will see three remaning sets of high output preamp RCA's Front, Rear and Sub. Simply run three long pairs of RCA cables down your car into each dedicated amplifier.
