How To Fix Car Stereo Keeps Resetting Not Keeping MEMORY when turning off

If your aftermarket car stereo such as Pioneer Kenwood Alpine or JVC or even an android style car stereo keeps resetting not keeping memory when turning off, then it is not wired correctly. On every aftermarket radio there are three wires that provide power and functionality. If you look at the back of the aftermarket car stereo, you will find a bunch of wires attached to it, most of the wires will be for your car speakers. These are the important ones to fix this car audio problem. The ground is the black one which is the earth that connects to the negative terminal found on the battery through the cars electrical system. The red wire should be connected to an ignition source that is switched so the radio comes off and on with the key turned. The yellow wire is the memory wire, it is often thicker than the red wire. This is a constant live 12 volt feed directly from the positive terminal from the battery. This wire is what keeps the radio memory and if it is not connect the car stereo will not keep the memory.

When installing car radios over the years to fix this problem, I have sometimes seen were the red and yellow wire is connected directly together to an ignition live wire. Yes, this does provide power to the car headunit but it will keep resetting the memory every time you turn your car off. Settings such as audio equalizer settings adjustments you made, clock settings and saved radios stations will not be saved permanently. To fix this issue, it is not complicated if you have some electrical basic knowledge, it’s just a wiring configuration that you need to change and you will fix the problem.

You will need to remove your radio and inspect the wiring on the radio harness and use an multimeter to help you find which wire is a constant 12 volt wire from the vehicle, connect to yellow wire on radio and also find another wire that goes on and off with the key, connect to red wire on radio. You will find many wiring harness diagrams for your factory wiring, this will help you get a better indication as to which wire does what. To remove your aftermarket from your car is simple, it is usually held in by either a single or double din metal cage. If you get a flat head screwdriver, you should be able to pry the radio out from each side until it comes off. If it’s a new style car, you may need to remove several panels and screws to get access to the radio. Please do a YouTube search to find out how to remove your car stereo. You may need plastic trim removal tools also.
