If you have installed an aftermarket car stereo into your car and it has a USB port, it can be used to charge your phone. This is because it can provide 5 volts which is perfectly sufficient for charging, however i doubt that it will just as fast a mains wall charger. I have always used the supplied power from the USB port provided on the car stereo on many Pioneer, Kenwood and Sony radios. Not only for charging smartphones but also to provide power to my sat nav on certain occasions. This is ideal if you don't want to carry additional 12 volt cigarette USB adapters all the time. All you need to charge your phone using your car stereo is a compatible cable.
NOTE UPDATE: Some car headunit manufacturers have decided to remove the charging feature out of the USB port on new line up models to save costs.
1) Connect the USB plug from the charging wire into the port on the car stereo.
2) Connect the other end into your phone.
3) Key the ignition and power on your car stereo. The USB port will now be charging your phone.
