How To Fix a Car Stereo That Won't Read USB Drive in Port

Most modern aftermarket car stereos have a USB port which allow you to insert a memory stick with some mp3 files and play your music from it. Some also allow you to connect your smartphone such as your iphone via USB. Sometimes this technology can become problematic at times because the car stereo won't read the USB drive connected into the port. This can be the actual USB drive thats faulty, so plug it into your computer or laptop to ensure that it can be picked up. I purchased a brand new Sony CD Player with USB support for a cheap good price, but the USB port wasn't working.

Formatting the USB drive that you plug into the front of the stereo to make it work fixed the problem.

1) Plug the USB pen drive into your computer.

2) Once it comes up in My Computer right click on the name of the drive and select Format.

3) A format tool will appear onscreen. Select the File System to 'FAT 32' as this is the correct format.

4) Untick the quick format box and select the start button at the bottom. This will wipe all your music files and make it compatible with the car stereo.

If your USB device is still not supported or recognised by your car stereo, you may require to clean the port itself. This is because from daily use dirt or dust can get trapped inside blocking the metal contact with the four gold pins inside the port. This can cause problems with the CD Player to read information from it causing connectivity problems all the time.

1) Power off the car stereo.

2) Get a small cotton bud and dip it into rubbing alcohol.

3) Rub the wet side against the metal contacts and around the inside of the USB slot.
