How To Power a Car Stereo With a Battery Charger

If you are wondering if you can use a 12 Volt Car Battery charger to run your car stereo at home the answer is yes you can. Most basic ones are rated around 5-10 amps and the faster more powerful ones can provide up to 25-30 amps. Either way these ratings are more than enough to switch on your car stereo and make it work at home. However, some people have said when powering a car stereo with a battery charger that there is a odd hum sound from any speakers connected when playing back music. This could be due to the how it delivers the power output, but it depends on which you have so realistically you can't just make that statement. If you notice this problem, you might want to look at connecting your car radio to a computer power supply unit instead as an alternative source.

1) Ensure that the appliance is disconnected from mains wall outlet socket to ensure that it is safe to work on. There will be two color connector crocodile leads that will be coloured red and black.

2) Find the yellow and red wires from the wiring loom harness connected into the back of your car cd player. Twist them together and connect them to the positive crocodile lead from the battery charger. You will also find a small black ground wire, connect that also to the remaining black crocodile clip lead.

3) Now that you have made the power connections, ensure that the clips are very far apart to prevent them touching each other. Just to be on the safe side i would suggest you wrap insulation tape around the copper parts to prevent any shorts occurring. If they do occur, an internal fuse should protect your car audio stuff, but its best to always prevent something happening rather than letting it happen.

4) You can now connect your speakers, the maximum that you attach is four just like how many you can if it was fitted into a vehicle. The rated ohm impedance is 4 ohms, but you can also connect other types of 8 or 16 ohms hifi stereo speakers as well. Switch on the car battery charger from the mains, also flicking the switch on the front of the box. The power should come on right away to the car stereo with using a battery charger perfectly just like in a car.
