If you don't have a hifi system at home, but have a spare unused car stereo and a computer power supply, then why not play your car stereo at home. Technically, to power a car stereo in your house, you will need a PC PSU to convert a car radio for home use. What it does it takes the standard 240 volts from your mains supply of electricity and transfers it into a useable 12 volts to power on a car stereo in your house. Now the type of PSU can be anything rated for 300 watts onwards, anything less may result in the car stereo shutting off at high volumes due to insufficient power handing. Now to hook up a car stereo to a computer power supply at home, all you really need to do is make some small alternations to the wiring to make the setup work for home use. We will show you how today.

1) Ok look at the bunch of wires coming out from the PSU. Look at the 24 pin block style ATX connector that would usually connected into the motherboard. Connect the green and black wires together, this will trick it to switch on as soon as you flick the power from the wall.

2) Now all you need to do is connect the power and ground to the car stereo. Cut off all the yellow wires coming from the molex connectors and do the same for the black wires as well.

3) Connect all the yellow wires together and the black wires separately. So you have a bunch of 12 volt wires and ground wires.

4) Attach the red and yellow wires from the car stereo wiring harness to 12 volt yellow wires from the PSU. Connect the black ground wire coming from the power supply to the bunch of black wires you have connected together before. Make sure that they are well insulated using PVC tape or solder them together and use heatshrink.

5) All you need to do now is connect the speaker wires. You can connect upto four external speakers just like you would in a car audio system in your vehicle front and rear.
