If you are doing a little DIY project experiment at home or want to test out a car stereo to see if its working, you will require to connect the car radio straight directly to a 12 volt battery. When you wire your car stereo directly to the car battery, its recommended that you use a fuse to protect the radio. This is because sometimes sparks can occur when connecting the wires to the battery or wires can becoming shorted out. This will save your expensive car stereo from getting damaged due to an electrical error if it ever does happen. We have made a few custom music boom boxes out of the leisure batteries we had sitting around the workshop and it worked great to keep us entertainment while working on car audio installs. Here are the instructions on how to wire a car stereo straight to a 12v battery to help you with your custom project.

1) Ensure that the car battery has suffcient charge. If not use a mains battery charger to recharge it, as a dead battery will not power up your car stereo due to having insufficient voltage.

2) Now you will need to examine the different wires on the back of wiring harness that plugs into the car stereo.  Find the yellow, red for power and memory and black for gound. The rest of the wires will be for connecting your car speakers or RCA plugs to external amplifiers.

3) Now you will need two metal terminals that go over the battery posts. This will make the wires more secure as they can become undone from vibrations and knocks.

4) Connect the red and yellow wires together from the car stereo and attach them to the positive terminal with fitting a inline glass fuse. Then followed by connected the black wire to the negative terminal on the car battery. You may notice a slight spark when attaching them this is normal and shows that the car battery has got a good charge.
