How To Make Your Own 6X9 Car Speaker Shelf

make your own rear parcel shelf for your car spekers

If you are planning on installing aftermarket speakers in the back of your car, you might want to think about making a stronger car speaker shelf. Now drilling a hole in the existing car shelf thats already in the back is a not bad idea, but after some time it will fall down due to the extra weight placed on it from the large magnets. This can be a particular problem with most powerful loud 6x9 speakers, so its best to make your own stealth shelf out of MDF. Now its not as hard as you think, it can take no more than a couple of hours of your time. If you get it done for a car audio shop the job will be great, but if you are on a budget then you can do the labour side yourself if you get all the parts you need. If you have the time on your hands and the tools, then follow these instructions to help you with making your own 6x9 speaker parcel shelf.

1) Remove the existing parcel shelf from the back of your car.

2) Place this on the sheet of MDF wood and draw around it using a pencil or pen.

3) Once you have sketched out the shape of the current parcel shelf, using a jigsaw drill cut around the lines you have just drawn out on the wood.

4) Now that you have replicated the shape, you need to make the holes for the 6X9 speakers to fit. If you don't already have a template cut out like we do at the shop, then you will need to measure out the inner diameter of the speaker basket onto the MDF. Once you have the measurements mark the size of the speaker and the screw holes.

5) Using a jigsaw drill cut out the holes for the speakers and using a normal drill to punch for holes for the screws to fit it around the speaker.

5) Ok so now that you have the cutting and the shape for the rear speaker shelf, all you need to do is fabricate it. Get some speaker carpet or something that goes well with your car interior.

6) Place your own homemade custom shelf onto the floor in a open space and spray evenly carpet adhesive glue around on the wood.

7) Lay the speaker box carpet on the wood wrapping it around and going over it with your hand to smooth it down. You might want to trim the edges with a blade to get a nice finish. This will ensure that all of the carpet fibres are stuck down onto the wood so that it doesn't come off later on.

8) Allow the glue that is holding the carpet onto the wood to dry for 24 hours. Now that you have done this all you need to do is place the shelf into the rear of your car, place the 6x9 speakers in and wire then up to either your car stereo or external amplifier depending on your preference.
