How To Make Car Door Speakers Sound Better Without an Amplifier

If you are wondering how to make your car door speakers sound better without an amplifier, then there are several things to consider. Adding an amplifier will increase power (RMS watts) to the speakers, however, it won't increase the sound quality of the speakers. This is because all a car amplifier does is increase the input signal sent from the car stereo into the amplifier to power the speaker. More RMS watts = more volume because the signal is being made bigger. I have worked for several car audio shops in my younger days and I would like to share all the tips you can use to make your car door speakers sound better without adding an amplifier.

This article is only intended if you have replaced the factory car speakers with aftermarket car speakers. There is only so much you can do with stock speakers. In the general car, stock speakers sound terrible and even Bose car audio sounds not the best. This is due to their poor construction and materials used to make the cone. Getting a good set of coaxial or component speakers from JL audio or Focal will certainly provide better clarity and volume in your music. Once you have a good set of speakers, you can then consider other factors to improve the sound quality from the music you listen to from your car audio system.

Upgrade the head unit if you're using a stock unit. This is the brain of your system, everything right from the music gets processed by the car stereo and it distributes it across the system. Stock headunits don't have many music features such as a 5 or 7 band equalizer to fine-tune different frequencies and they also don't have a decent DAC chip inside. If you are looking to get the best bass and sound quality out of your speakers start by upgrading the stock CD player to an aftermarket one. All headunits have a small amplifier inside. Although they may not be powerful compared to adding an external four channel amplifier to your car speakers, an aftermarket headunit will certainly have more power than your stock factory radio. Most aftermarket headunits have decent 4x25rms which is plenty if you have high-efficiency car audio speakers installed into your doors.

Apply sound deadening material. Many people often overlook the benefits of car sound deadening material, however, it is very important in getting the best sound quality out of your car speakers without an amplifier. It stops road noise and increases midbass. Less rattle = a tighter accurate sound. Your car door speakers will sound better, and you will notice the bass response will be improved. Sound deadening material isn't cheap, however, it is easy to apply. You peel the back off from the material and cut it to shape and apply it onto any metal panels on your car. The car doors are the most important because the vibrations from the speaker cone cause noise. However, if you have a car audio system with 1000s of watts, you may want to consider doing the full car.

Playing with the audio settings in your headunit. If your car headunit is advanced with many features, once you have upgraded to an aftermarket one, there are many options you will find available in the headunits menu. The equalizer is a great place to start if you want more clarity from your car door speakers to make them sound better without an amplifier. Make sure you fine-tune them individually using a wide range of different songs. Turning them up to the maximum level won't make your car door speakers louder and will only cause a negative effect. You can also set up a high pass filter to filter out the bass, to prevent the car speakers from distorting. However, if you don’t have an external aftermarket subwoofer installed into the trunk of your vehicle, you might want to leave this setting because your car audio system will be lacking bass.
