How To Test Car Amplifier Mosfet Transistors REPAIR / SERVICE

check blown car amp transistor

If your car amplifier is blown, i.e not powering on or no bass coming from your subwoofers first thing to check are the mosfet transistors. These are an electrical component that is installed into car amps multiple times to provide it to convert the input power into a signal to power your speakers. Now to check if a mosfet is bad its best to unsolder it from the circuit board. This is because if its still soldered onto the board the digital or analog multimeter can provide you with inaccurate readings. So before testing the mosfet transistors on your car amp please remove them. But if you can see obvious signs of damage such as a snapped burned leg or a crack in the square black part, you already know it needs replacing. There are different many guides on the internet that are informative but are very confusing. This is made for you to easily understand what to do, in fact even my three year old has tested some just for jokes.

1) A mosfet transistor has three legs named as source, gate and drain.

2) Use the turnable selector to adjust your multimeter into diode test configuration.

3) Attach the black probe onto the source lead and the red probe onto the gate lead.

4) Now move the positive probe to the drain leg. Look carefully at the multimeters display. If its ok it should show you a reading on screen with a low resistance.

5) Holding the positive probe at the drain leg, hold the source and gate legs with your fingers. The DMM should show a immediate reading that is very high. If the mosfet does the complete opposite it is toasted and will need to be replaced.

Its essential to test a mosfet with a multimeter to check if its is bad because you don't want to be spending money on replacing them all if its only one thats bad out of the four. Always replace a blown mosfet transisor with the same kind, there will be a code printed onto it. If you search that online you will hopefully find the exact replacements.
