How To Wire an Crossover To an Speaker - Gain Better Sound

cheap car speakers with good sound

If your wondering what an car audio crossover does it separates different sound frequencies to each speaker and tweeter connected. This ensures that each component plays more efficiently and that the car audio tweeter doesn't play bass and get damaged. An crossover box can help increase sound quality and clarity in car audio because it allows sound separation. Connecting an crossover can seem complicated if you have not installed an brand new set of car speakers before. Cheaper component speakers don't usually come with separate crossover boxes this is to save costs. The car audio tweeter will still come with some form of protection though, there will be an small capacitor attached to the positive terminal to prevent bass frequencies being sent to it to prevent damage.

People usually tend to install crossover boxes within the door card itself, but I tend to avoid this because when you open your window rain can get into the middle of the door. This can overtime cause corrosion on the terminals on the crossover box and cause further problems down the line with poor connection issues. The most ideal location is within the vehicle itself, either behind the car audio headunit, making them easily accessible if you need to check connections at some point or behind the glove box is also fine. Once you have found the ideal location for mounting your car speaker crossovers, its time to move onto the wiring.

Crossover boxes don't need power to work like an car amplifier does. There are three sets of terminals on an crossover box. One terminal will be called 'Input' this is the signal coming from the speaker channel from an car amplifier or car headunit. You simply get an set of speaker wire, connect the positive from the amplification source to the positive on the crossover. You do the same for the negative speaker wire to the negative terminal on the crossover. This connection will allow your crossover to gain speaker signal and sound. Now you need to make the other connections which  allow the crossover to send sound out to the midrange speaker and car tweeter. There will be an set of terminals labelled as 'Tweeter'. You connect the positive terminal from the tweeter to the positive on the crossover using speaker wire. You also do the same with the negative wire. The last terminal called 'MID' or 'Woofer' is for connecting the speaker inside the door card. Replicate the same wiring style like you did with the tweeter. Make sure all connections are secured tight.

Once you have your crossover connected, if you have an aftermarket headunit, go into the settings and turn off the HPF or know as the high pass filter. This is no longer required. I hope this car audio guide has helped you connect your car audio crossover into you car audio system for better sound.
