How To Make & Install Car Speaker Baffles

You can improve the car speakers response in the door by adding a separate baffle. This will allow the cone to provide more bass and mid punch making your music sound better. Now usually the design is constructed from either a foam or wood material as they provide good constructability and are strong. But the main question is do you really need one? Well technically i mean your speaker is still going to work regardless, however having a baffle fitted will add more depth to the sound quality so they are worth it i would say. This used along with sound deading material will make the cheap car speakers perform far more better than ones that cost three times as much. We have proven this in our car audio shop when we did a comparison with a normal regular door and a deaden door with a professionally made baffle. Now making your own custom baffles for either your 6.5 or 6x9 speakers can be tricky. Here is the procedure that we use at our car audio shop all the time, i thought it might be useful so i posted it up on here. You could also maybe make in wall ceiling speaker baffles as well using the same instructions.

1) Remove the door card panel so you can gain access. Be careful when you do this because at the back there will be wires attached to the controls and the clips could break off, so please be gentle during this first step.

2) Remove the current factory speaker. All you need to do is take the screws out and disconnect the wires from the back of wire coming from the stereo or amplifier.

3) Measure the space between the door frame and the window itself. Also make a measurement of the space remaining between the frame and the door panel. Make a note of all these on a scrap piece of paper.

4) Now you have to measure the depth of the speaker, as you need to know how much clearance there is when it is fitted behind the magnet.

5) So now that you have obtained the most important measurements, you can use them to work out the thickness of the MDF wood that you require. What we tend to use at the shop is 1/2 MDF as it works with most car brands.

6) Using a router, use a spiral downcut flush trim bit with a 2 inch shank at the end for the extra space that is required for it to drop in. Use the router to cut the mounting hole to perfection.

7) Its best to check that it fits, so head back to the vehicle and test it out. If the hole is still too small or large you can make the adjustments to make it fit accordingly to your desired spec of your audio system.
