How To Prevent Blowing Car Audio Tweeters

Car audio tweeters are the most sensitive component used in car audio to produce high treble frequencies. They don't require a lot of rms power to get going compared to an car subwoofer, as tweeters are efficient in playing the highs, hence why they are so small. Car tweeters in conjunction with an midrange car speaker will provide greater clarity over coaxial style speakers. If you notice you keep blowing car tweeters, chances are you are damaging them by improper settings. Tweeters can handle anything below 2 kHz, if you don't have an crossover in place, all frequencies including low bass will be sent to them. This overtime will damage them and you also can't tell because the tweeter won't play bass, however the small tiny diagraph will try to play low bass notes and simply will fail. The best way to prevent your car tweeters from blowing up is to protect them. You can do this by adding an capacitor onto the positive terminal on the car tweeter. This will filter out any unwanted bass being played to them, this is the cheap way of doing it.

The proper way to protect your tweeters from bass sounds is to connect an standalone crossover box. There will be one for the left side and one required for the right side. An crossover box has internal filtering components to ensure both the mid range and tweeter is playing the right sounds. This will not only protect your equipment, but it will also increase the amount of sound quality in your car audio system. Connecting an crossover box is simple. There will be one set of terminal labelled as input, you connect either the speaker channel wire from your car headunit or car amplifier. This wire sends music to the crossover to process the music. Then there will be two set of terminals, one to connect the car tweeter to and the set to connect the car speaker to. Make sure when wiring that you do the polarity correctly to ensure best sound.

An crossover usually helps, but also remember not to overpower your car tweeters. Always check the RMS rating of them and try to match it closely as possible to the rms on the car amplifier. Also ensure that your gain your car amplifier is correctly tuned to prevent distortion of clipping. If it sounds distorted simply turn it down.
