How To Fix Crackling Car Tweeters

car tweeters crackling

Car tweeters in an audio system are the most sensitive component there is. They are fragile and if run incorrectly can produce horrible sound that can lead to mechanical failure. If your car tweeters are make a cracking sound, there can be many reasons causing this. The two most common causes of car tweeters cracking are overpowering or sending bass to them. Both can cause the tiny voice coil inside to become degraded overtime. If you notice that your car audio tweeters are cracking, its best to fix them now before its too late and they eventually blow out.

1) Does your car tweeter only crackle at high volumes? This happens if you are powering your car tweeters power from an external amplifier that is way too powerful for the tweeters to handle. We seen once a 250 watts rms amp 2 channel connected to 2 tweeters each rated at 50 watts each. Best way is to turn down the gain, these results in less signal being amplified to the tweeters, reducing the amount of power your car amp is delivering out. If you are powering your car tweeters directly from the car headunit, then you are not overpowering them at all so move onto step 2.

2) Bass is going to the tweeters. The cone is too small to reproduce low bass frequencies like a sub can. This results in crackling to be heard. To avoid this its best to turn on the HPF on your car stereo or car amplifier to 80HZ. If you don't have the filter crossover setting then you can manually block out bass going to your tweeters by adding a small electrical power capacitor onto the positive terminal.

If you have considered the two common causes of car tweeters to crackle, hopefully you have solved the problem. If you are still get the crackling sound, there might be some dirt ontop of the tweeters causing it to crackle when it produces sounds due to vibrations taking place. If still no luck, then the tweeters are most likely developed a fault due to improper use.
