If you are on a low budget and in the need of some cheap speaker wire, you can make your own out of an old electrical extension cord. Basically inside it, there are three decent quality wires inside the cable, what you can do is strip these from the outer insulation and keep two wires from it. Now in terms of what impact it has on sound quality, you can't really tell the difference between using an extension cord and proper speaker wire. Generally, speaker wire is supposed to have a low resistance and have better shielding, but in most cases it will work just as good. The reason why you are thinking about doing this is because you don't want to spend any money, which is why this alternative is recommended. However, if you are running $2000 dollar equipment in your car, you would have not been hear in the first place. Now to make your own DIY electrical cables its easy all you need is an old extension cord that you don't need and some wire strippers.
1) Using a wire cutter snip off the plug and the plug sockets on the other end.
2) Now you will have a long piece of wire going from one end to another.
3) Using a wire stripper, remove the outer insulation from the cable to reveal the inside cables.
4) On the UK plugs you will find three color wires, blue, brown and green. On a US plug you will find two wires.
5) Unstip about 1 cm of insulation off the electrical wire on both the blue and brown wires. You can use the blue one for positive and the brown one for negative. The other left over wire can be used as a spare.
