A car subwoofer is usually provided by a powerful amplifier to go with the audio setup to provide that extra kick. Either way if you are short of cash or boot space and don't want a load of wires running down your vehicle, then you could also connect it directly to the car headunit, by bypassing one of the rear speakers to the box. This will still provide the subwoofer will some power, although it won't hardly be as close to the recommend RMS rating in the specs found in the user guide. If you are wanting to make a subwoofer perform louder and sound better without connecting additional car amp, you can make use of an equalizer adjustment.
An equalizer allows you to fine tune your system to make it how you like it to sound. Some perfer more treble others like more hard hitting bass or infact like both. Different sliders change different frequencies, so different parts of the music such as vocals and drum bass. Ideally, if you are after more bass from your subwoofer without a car amp, you would want to increase the first sliders of the EQ, as these control the bass setting them to the highest level. Slowly decreasing the ones towards the right hand side of the screen to make the boom sound more apparent and deeper to your ears and make your seats vibrate. This will certainly impress your friends and when you open the trunk and show them the subs with no amp they will be astonished to say the least.
