How To Make a Ported Subwoofer Box Sealed For Better Quality Sound

There are many different types of subwoofer boxes designs to consider when determining the perfect sounding enclosure for 2 12s. Ported vented boxes tend to give a more boomy louder sound vs sealed boxes that provide more deeper and better sound quality. Some people mention that ported boxes sound a little muddy, however others argue it all depends on how its built and what frequency the port tube is tuned at. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with how you ported box sounds, you can try it out sealed temporarily if you want. Making a ported box sealed is really easy, in fact all you need to do really is block the port with a towel and you can make your ported subwoofer sealed. Blocking the port will make it sound less boomy and more refined making the bass sound more punchy. This trick also works for a home theatre designed subwoofer. You will also notice that the bass no longer overpowers the music and it blends in nicely with all kinds of music, increasing sound quality and reducing spl slightly. Since there is no peak being created from the port firing into the trunk, the bass will sound more natrual.

1) Turn off the music by reducing the volume on your car stereo. This will make it easier stuffing the port since there will be no air being rushed out from it.

2) Get hold of a fresh towel that you don't really use in the bathroom. A cloth or sock would also be just as good, but you may require more to block the port completely.

3) Pop open the trunk and find the port location on your subwoofer box. Start by pushing in the towel stuffing it right in all way until the port is no longer seen. To make your sealed box ported again, all you need to do is simply remove the towel from the port.
