How To Reduce Subwoofer Crazy Port Noise

fix port noise on your sub box

A ported box if built right can provide a far more significant sound over a sealed box. It can provide around a boost in 3DB being louder around the tuning frequency. Ported boxes are a bit trickier to get right, you must have the right volume and port length size for it to sound right. You can't just build a sealed box and stick a random PVC aero pipe it into. Some people will experience port noise with their vented enclosure. This can sound like chuffing or like air is rushing out of a hole, you can hear it more on the low frequencies of music. How you can reduce port noise is by flaring the ends of the pvc port you have fitted into the box. This will smooth out the air rushing out of the port when the subwoofer plays bass, this will fix subwoofer port noise. Flaring the ends of a port is easy.

1) Get a metal bowl. You can get these from pet stores.

2) Place the PVC pipe onto the bottom side of the bowl.

3) Get you heat gun and apply even heat across the bottom of the pipe. While doing so, hold it from the top and twist the bottom end of the aero port onto the bowl.

4) Keep twisting and heating up the plastic until in forms a flared share at the end.

5) Once you are happy with the flare on the aero port, turn off the heat gun and place it out of the way.

6) While holding the pvc pipe in the same position, quickly pour a glass of water into the middle of the PVC pipe. This will within a few seconds force the plastic to form the flare shape permanently.

7) Smooth down any rough edges with sandpaper to ensure the air flows smoothly out of the port.
