Can you make a ported box sealed?
If you like loud bass then a high tuned ported box is for you, but if you are more of a sound quality person that likes refined punchy deep bass across the sub frequency range sealed is beater. If you have just build a ported box and you don't like the sound of it, you can covert in from ported to sealed. You might end up preferring the sound of the sealed box before you toss it in the bin. There are two ways that you can seal up a ported subwoofer box.
Temporally
If you are unsure with how your subwoofer will
response to converting a ported box to a sealed, then its best to test it out
first. The results may vary. All you need is some socks or a nice bathroom
towel.
1) You can leave the subwoofer inside the
enclosure, you don't have to take it out.
2) Get a few bathroom towels or socks, basically
anything you can find to stuff inside the port that will block it nicely. I
have even tried my kids teddies, however when returned to them they were
battered and fluff was coming out of them thanks to the JL audio W7. hahalol
3) Stuff your objects into the port, keep
stuffing until the port is fully covered so that no air can come out of the
port.
This is easily irreversible, which means if you
don't the results then you move back to ported. If you like the new sound of a
sealed box over a ported, then move down to the next step
Permanently
1) You will need to cover up the port with
MDF.
2) Measure and mark down on a fresh piece of MDF
the diameter of the port. Make sure you add a few inches extra on the diameter
so that it covers the port hole.
3) Cut out with a jigsaw the markings you have
made on the wood.
4) You will have your piece to stick over the
port ready. If your box is carpeted you remove the carpet near the port, just
cut around the port with a blade. This will help the wood stick better. Pour
wood glue around the edges of the port cover you have made.
5) Press down the glue side directly onto the
area that is ported that you want to cover.
6) To ensure its fully sealed and no air can
escape out, drill and screw six times around the port cover until covered.
Sometimes the vibrations of the subwoofer if powerful and playing lows air can escape
out the port cover even glued, so screws help force it to stay down.
