How To Seal a Ported Subwoofer Box

how to port a sealed sub box

A ported box is going to provide you with boomy bass that is not tight and punchy. If you seal up the port on the box it will give you less of that boom and more of a deep low end rumble. Vented boxes are louder, but they can make the sound quality slightly lower. Now in terms of converted a ported box to a sealed its fairly simply. All you need to do is cover up the port whether this will be an aero pvc pipe or a slot vent made from MDF. You can temporary seal it will a towel or sock to test how it would sound like before permanently sealing it up.

1) Find the port location on the subwoofer box. Most cases its either on the front near the subwoofers or on the back.

2) To get an air tight seal, you cut out a shape that goes over the port covering all areas on some mdf. Mark it up on the on a MDF board with a marker pen.

3) Using your jigsaw cut out the shape you have made on the wood.

4) Place the wood over the port and pour glue around the edges. Mark up four screw holes in each corner.

5) Screw four long wood screws into the corners of the wood to securely hold it down in place. The screws will also hold the wood in place that will also help the glue to dry at the same time.
