A subwoofer can add extra bass thats missing in
your car audio system. Subwoofers come in all sorts of sizes, the bigger
usually means louder and deeper bass due to having more cone area. Now a sub
needs a specific enclosure to work well, depending on your tuning and internal
volume, it can take lots of space up in your trunk. This can be an issue if you
are looking to build a vented style enclosure for your subwoofer. The best way
if you want to take little or no space in your trunk is to place a subwoofer
inside the spare tyre wheel well compartment. This has enough room for you to
place a special made spare wheel subwoofer enclosure. Basically, all you need
to do is form the top part of the compartment and place the sub inside it. The
internal shape of the tyre well will form the shape of the enclosure.
1) Get some MDF and measure up the width and
height of the car tyre well. Mark up the area leaving around 15 cm around each
side.
2) Cut out the shape you have drawn out of your
subwoofer onto the MDF.
3) Place your subwoofer into it, screwing it down
and attaching speaker wire onto the terminals. Connect the sub to a small powered external amplifier that matches the rms output of the coil.
4) Now that you have the board that you can slot
into the tyre well, all you need to do is mount it firmly by using four small
screws. If you don't want to drill into the metal in your car, you can also use
strong Velcro straps to do the same job.
Now the sound isn't going to be the best as a
custom made ported box. After all the size of the tyre well is limited to how
much space it can deliver for the subwoofer. We recommend that you use small
subwoofers such as an 8 or 10 inch because the magnet takes less space up. This
results in more internal volume and a better sound because the sub has more
room to move internally.
