How To Make a Car Subwoofer Louder Without an Amplifier

building ported subwoofer enclosure

Everybody wants the loudest car audio bass system in town but nobody wants to spend money on a new amplifier unless they really have to. Now to make your subwoofer louder, most people just jump to an conclusion that you need a more powerful amplifier. This is not always the case, in fact did you know that the enclosure has the most influence on how loud and deep your car subwoofer sounds. If you are using a cheap prefab box from Bestbuy or Walmart your subwoofer is not going to play to its full potential and not efficiently as it should. Now if you want loud bass from your car subwoofer without having a big powerful car amplifier, then you should consider making your own custom ported box. With a ported box design compared to sealed, you have the potential of making your subwoofer play louder to your own desired frequency range. For loud bass you want to tunw the port in the upper bass region around 50HZ. This will certainly make your subwoofer play really loud both inside and outside the car with a nice deep bass tone, but its gained for loudness and spl levels.

Before building your custom built ported box for your subwoofer you need to know what cubic feet internal volume your subwoofer is designed for to work its best. This is because the manufacturer has tested the subs performance under all different circumstances and has worked out the best possible internal volume to ensure that the speaker plays to its ultimate loudest. Once you have found out that, you need to measure up the space you have in the trunk so you know what to work with. Once you have the measurements, enter them into a free subwoofer box calculator with your desired ported tuning frequency to 50HZ. This will then automatically workout the maths behind it, so all you need to do is make note of the MDF wood measurements to get it cut down to size when you get to your local wood cutting place. Once you have the wood in your car, its time to get building in your garage.

1) Lay the wood flat onto the floor and plan out clearly what pieces are going to go where.

2) Start by pouring wood glue onto the joints of the wood were they are going to connect with the other half. Pour it in a zigzag shape evenly across the area to get an air tight seal.

3) Line up the wood with the glue on the other piece and press it down. To secure the wood piece use a clamp to help it stay in place while its drying. You need to perform this will all of the different pieces of the wood. Once you have made a box shape then you will need to move onto the port.

4) Now depending on what the subwoofer tuning calculator says, in most cases you will need to cut the PVC aero port to length to get the 50 Hz tuning frequency to get the loud subwoofer bass that you are after. Get a handsaw and mark up around the plastic part were you want to make the cut and start sawing through the plastic.

5) Draw the inner diameter of the port onto the front of the box. Using a jigsaw cutter, cut around it carefully. Once you have made the hole, place the plastic aero port into the box and behind it secure it down using hot glue from a glue gun.

6) Now that you have constructed the box and fitted the aero port, all you need to now is fit the speaker cup terminal and cut the hole for the subwoofer. Then all is left is to connect speaker wire inside the box and allow the glue to dry for a minimum of 48 hours.
