If your subwoofer enclosure box is flexing so bad, then you will lose lots of valuable output from your speaker. Technically, its causing air leaks because the MDF wood if flexing apart and under the gaps air is coming out. This is very bad on a sealed box but on a ported you can tell as much. Once you fix the subwoofer flex on your box you will notice deeper loud bass that you were missing out on before. If your subwoofer is over a 1000 watts rms and has strong motor force, then you will get box flex. There are a few things to make your subwoofer box stronger inside that can prevent subwoofer box flexing.
1) First thing is to secure the panel that is
flexing. It might not be screwed at all and due to the flexing, the old glue
might have come apart. You will need to apply new wood glue and screws.
2) If your box is carpeted, you will need to
remove the speaker cloth so you can get to the wood. If your box is uncovered,
then skip this step. Simply find a corner and gently peel away, remember don't
do it too fast or it will rip the material.
3) Since the panel is already kind of fitted on,
the best way is to pour glue into the gaps sitting between the panel and the
box. So, lift the panel up with one finger and pour glue into the sides of the
box of the panel that is flexing, doing this all around until fully
glued.
4) Next every 5 cm drill a hole and place a 2-inch
drywall screw in it. This will ensure your subwoofer box will not move from
movement. Once the glue has dried, you can stick the carpet back on. You are
now done fixing your flexing subwoofer box from the outside. Now we are going
to move onto the inside.
5) Remove the subwoofer from the box, followed by
disconnecting the speaker wire. Once you have done this find the panel that was
flexing. Using wood glue go around all the sides and corners of the inside of
the box. This will prevent other panels also coming to the point of suffering
from sub flex.
6) The last thing to do is create some internal
bracing. You can get pieces of wood dowel and place them inside the box. Simply
cut the dowel to the boxes internal height, place glue on both ends and squeeze
them in tightly. I usually but these on the sides of the box away from the
speaker on both ends. This will provide a structure for the subwoofer box and
will make it stronger to prevent it from subwoofer flex.
