How To Make a Car Subwoofer Sound Better

If you are lacking bass in your car, then adding a 10- or 12-inch car subwoofer usually does the trick into adding more bass into your ride.  If you have purchased an expensive car subwoofer but you are not getting the sound you expected, there is always some fine turning that you can carry out to make it sound better. There are certain settings that you can change on the car stereo and car amplifier to improve the amount of bass. Today, we are going to explain how to make a car subwoofer sound better in your motor vehicle.

1) Make sure the gain is setup correctly. Some people think this is a volume control just like what you see on a car radio. This is not the case; this is used to match the voltage coming from your car radio for your car amplifier. Get a flat screwdriver and adjust the gain back down when you hear distortion from your car subwoofer. You also may be losing volume output if this had been turned down too much in the past, as it may have been mistaken for a volume knob.

2) Bridge your car amplifier if it supports it. This is using two separate car audio channels and connecting them into one. You take the negative from one side and the positive from the other side and you connect them, it’s very simple. In most cases double the RMS power will be provided to your subwoofer.

3) Adjust the equalizer on your car stereo. There will be many options inside a car stereo that allows you to adjust equalizer and bass. The sliders that are around 50 HZ to 60 HZ control the bass, if you increase it, you will get more bass from your car subwoofer. However, don't just turn everything up fine-tune it sounds clean and nice.

4) Turn of the low pass filter. If you are using a car amplifier, it will have an LPF switch of some kind. This will stop the vocals from your music to be coming out of the car subwoofer. Turn on the LPF either on your car stereo or car amp and set it at 80HZ. This means it will play bass frequencies below 80HZ and anything above it will get filtered off.

5) Build a new box? If your car subwoofer is being used in a prefab box, then the build quality in most cases won't be great. If you want big bass without spending much, then building a custom subwoofer box is the best way to go. If you turn the port to around 35 Hz you will get nice loud bass with some low bass extension. If you want really low bass you can go for the 26HZ range.
