How To Use Car Speakers With a Cell Phone

If you have some unused car speakers sitting around your garage with some creativity, you can use them with your cell phone. If you get everything right, you can make your own compact cheap small portable speaker system for your smartphone without spending much. In order to get the best out of the car speakers in your hands, you will need to purchase a small little amp. The power that comes from the headphone socket is not going to be powerful enough to pump up the speakers. Most headphone amps inside phones are rated between 50 - 100 mw which is not even equivalent to 1 watt. Most car speakers are rated at around 40 - 50 watts, so you can see the logic behind this.

If you are after a cheap amplifier to use with your car speakers and cell phone, a Chinese company called 'Kinter' is you best bet. They have cheap mini amps all over Ebay and Amazon. The one that we recommend you for this project is the Kinter 500 watts MA - 150 Amplifier, right now you can get this delivered to the UK for £9.99. It has two channels, it says 500 watts on it but we highly doubt that but still it be more than enough for running a small setup. I say the most this amp provides is around 15 watts rms of true power. Right once you have the amp, you will need to start building this project. We tried this at our shop system on a lunch break just for fun to see what we could come up with. It sounded very impressive for what it is and with a good music player that has an equalizer setting you can get some good bass from car speakers through your phone.

1) The amp requires 12 volts rated a 5 amps to function. This can be obtained by connecting a DC adapter that matches this rating into the mains socket. You could also power it off a old computer power supply from the two wires on the molex connector, yellow for 12 volt and black for ground.

2) Next you will need to connect the speakers. There is a small wiring harness that comes inside the box, what you require is to plug this into the amp. Once you have done that connect the two channels to each speaker.

3) You will need to provide music to it. You will see two small RCA input sockets on the amp near a USB socket. You will need to purchase a 3.5mm lead with two RCA plugs on the end of it. Connect the headphone plug of the lead into the phone and the other two plugs into the white and red sockets on the amp.

4) Thats it you are all wired up. Power on the amp and launch the music player on your phone and play an audio track of your choice. If you have done this correctly, you should notice music playing from your car speakers using your cell phone.
