You will require to find out how to connect and hook up car speakers to an amplifier if you want to upgrade your car audio system. Before thinking about hooking up an amp to car speakers, you need to consider whether or not its a perfect match both interms of front and rear channels and power output. Each channel has its own RMS figure, this is the actual true continuous power rating, please ignore the max wattage ratings as they only used for marketing to make them look attractive and powerful to the younger non audio literate people, which is not fair really. Thats why you see all these young boys with big BOSS audio amplifiers with 5000 watts written on the top cover heatsink in big bold red writing thinking they are running some high end stuff.
So check what your front or rear door speakers you want to connect to your car amp are rated at, closley looking at the rms figure. For example, if the drivers are specified as 100 watts rms, then you need to find either a 2 or 4 channel amp that provides that hundred or more slightly to prevent any distortion taking place and messing up the sound quality at high volume levels which you dont wont. If you are connecting 6x9 speakers to the car amp, a two channel amplifier would be ideal around about 100-200 rms depending on how strong the voice coil and magnets are. JBL makes some solid products so check them out.
Connecting door speakers can be more challenging then connect a car amp to a subwoofer or rear 6x9 parcel shelf speakers. This is because you have to run lengths of cable down each side right into the door and into the rear truck, which can take a couple of hours to get the perfect stealthy install.
Right so you will need speaker wire. There are two important factors to consider, one being the length of the wire and second being the thickness of the gauge. I would recommend 20-18 gauge wire depending on what the power you are going to be running. Having thicker wire now also gives you the head room to upgrade later to more powerful car audio equipment because it can provide that extra bandwidth, providing your system with future potential without having to rip out all the wiring from your car again and upgrading it.
Here is a car speaker installation diagram to help you will the install
Instructions free guide as follows:
1) Begin the car audio install by running the wire from the front door speaker. So unstrip 3 cm of plastic insulation of the speaker wires, followed by twisting both copper wire braids separately. Now that you have done that, attach car speaker terminal connectors onto both ends and using a pilier squeeze them down so they are nice and tightly fitted. Slip on the connectors onto the speaker, so the red stripe is connected onto the positive + terminal and the other remaning negative plain wire to the - terminal.
2) Run the speaker wire through one of the rubber flexible hoses were existing wires are going through, which is found in between the door itself and the frame. Its ideal to install the speaker wire this way because it wont get damaged when opening and closing because the rubber material will protect it, also it will prevent any water damage to occur, preventing copper oxidation.
3) Next you will need to move the wires up to the rear trunk, So unclip the plastic side panels and run it through there into the back seat. Then push down the cables neatly and then place the plastic side panels back on clipping them down.
4) Right so the speaker wire is now accessible in the trunk you are now ready to make your connection to the output channel on the amp itself. So unstrip both wires and unscrew the left channel screws on the terminal block if its the left speaker you are wanting to connect. Insert the wire with the stripe into the + terminal and the plain non striped wire into the - terminal on the amp. Tighten up the connection using the screws and thats it you have connected your car speakers your amp successfully.
This connection process is basically the same for all front and rear door install speakers. If you are connecting 6x9 speakers in the back parcel shelf you can ignore the steps that instruct you how to run the speaker wire down you car. If thats the case you should just follow on from step 4. Any issues or questions drop a comment below after all we are here to help.
