How To Add Cooling Fans To Car Amp Rack To Stop Overheating

how to make car amp rack with fans

An amp rack placed into your cars trunk looks cool at car shows and meets. Sometimes it can cause car amplifiers to overheat due to the limited space they are fitted in and there is little space around to provide clearance between the amps. This can create a stuffy atmosphere for your car amps which is not good at all and they will eventually go into protect. Now to make your car amp run cooler in a amp rack you can connect multiple fans. This will contribute towards help moving cold air across the amps and keeping temperatures low. The configuration on how to setup your cooling fans would be best using the push and pull method. Basically the first fan connected on the left draws in cold air into the inside of the car amp tack and the other fan pushes all the hot are generated inside out. So its a system that will help extract heat created by the amps inside the amp rack.

1) Cut the inner diameter of the fan you are using on each side of the wooden mdf amp rack.

2) Now with the sticker side on the fan facing towards the left, screw the fan directly onto the hole you have cut out using screws in each of the four corners to secure it down.

3) Now on the other side flip the second fan over so that its not facing the sticker side and attach it onto the right hand side. So you have setup the fans to pull air in and force it back out.

4) Now you will need to wire them up. You could run it of the remote wire on the amp, however they will only be getting around 5 volts which limits how much air they create. So its best to install a relay and connect it directly to the 12 volts going into the amp so that the cooling fans always run on full power.

5) Connect the red fan wires together and the black wires. Insert the red wires from the fan into the 12 terminal on the relay. Do the same for the black wires inserting them into the chassis ground terminal on the relay.

6) Now you will need connect 12 volt power to the relay, you can do this by connecting a short piece of wire tapping into the 12 volts supplied to the car amp. Then all you need to do is connect a wire to the switched operation terminal on the relay onto the remote terminal on the amp were the blue wire from the car stereo goes onto. This will turn on your relay when the headunit sends the on signal to power on your amp, it will also power up the cooling fans also.
