How To TUNE Settings On Car Subwoofer For Best Sound

A car subwoofer delivers bass that is the main role of the speaker. An aftermarket amplifier is usually added in combination to provide power to it. On the car amplifier itself, there are many dials and switches that need to be setup correctly in order to get deep and loud bass out of your car subwoofer. If the settings on your car amplifier are not correct, then you can blow your car subwoofer or degrade the sound quality produced by it. No matter how expensive your car subwoofer is, if its not setup correctly then a cheap car subwoofer can easily outperform it tuned by an shop. Today, we are going to explain the different settings on your car amplifier and tell you how to adjust them for the best sound.

The Gain. Most people that install their car amplifier for the first time mistaken this for an volume control button. They automatically assume turning this up to the full level makes the car subwoofer louder. This is incorrect and this only leads to clipping and distortion at high volume levels, which often can't be identified when the trunk is closed. The best way to tune the gain is to set all the equaliser settings to your preferred preference and turn the radio volume all the way just before it provides a clipped or distorted signal. Once you have done this, then head over to the car amplifier and gradually turn the gain control using an flat head screwdriver. Stop immediately as soon as you hear any kind of distortion or mechanical noises coming out of the car subwoofer driver. The technical role of the gain is to try match it will the voltage coming out of the pre outs on the back of the radio.

The LPF (LOW PASS FILTER). This is another settings that is very important, it stops singing and vocals treble going to the car subwoofer. This allows the car subwoofer just to focus on playing bass and low frequencies. This should be switched on and the LPF filter dial should be setup between 60 or 80 HZ depending on your listening tastes. Make sure you turn off any HIGH PASS FILTER switch or setting if your using the car amplifier to power an car subwoofer. As this is used to filter off bass to car door speakers to prevent the blowing out.

BASS BOOST. This is seen on many car audio amplifiers and often cranked to the max ability. Setting it in this manner will only lead to a blown speaker. Bass boost is good to use if you have an factory stock radio with no equaliser settings on it. The bass boost on the car amp itself will have its own preset equaliser inside the amp, usually around 40 or 50 HZ. This increases the bass output and type of sound you get out of your car subwoofer. The best way to tune this feature, is to increase the bass boost on your car amplifier and stop until you notice no improvement of your car subwoofer bass production and hear a drop in sound quality. You want to hear deep bass and not distorted sounds. Bass boost is good if setup correctly, if you have an aftermarket radio then I suggest turning it off, because you will have a custom equaliser setting within the radio to master the sound and improve bass response anyway.
