There are two types of DAB aerials, there is one that fits under your windscreen and there is one that looks like a rubber pointy thing that goes outside the vehicle. In terms of which has the better reception, both work just as well, it's usually depends on the brand of the radio antenna and if its been installed correctly. Today, we will be helping you install your DAB windscreen aerial, as we have fitted several running an car audio shop in the past. Autoleads make high quality DAB aerial, its a car audio brand that you can trust.
The first thing that you need to do is remove the A pillar trim on the left side if your vehicle is an right hand drive. The best professional method is to use trim removal tools. These are made from soft plastic that don't cause any nasty scratching and prevent breaking trim clips. Sometimes, there can be a hidden screw under an small plastic tab, pry it off and see if there is an screw under it. You also want to be careful you don't nab the airbag and don't push your trim panel tool to deep. The last thing you want to do is set off the airbag. Once you have got the A pillar trim off, then you will need to prepare the surface. There are two parts to an windscreen DAB antenna, there is the part that sticks on the window, the plastic clear part, there is also the grounding part, which when you remove the protective sticky film it look like an copper colour. This copper part needs to directly stick onto the metal of the vehicle behind the plastic panel.
To get a good reliable connection for your radio antenna, use some high grit sandpaper to remove the excess paint to expose bear metal under were the A pillar trim goes. Once you have done this, stick down the copper part of the antenna onto this directly and press over it using your finger. You have now grounded the antenna, now the fun part is sticking it directly onto the windscreen itself. Clean the surface before mounting the clear part of the antenna on the screen. This will ensure it sticks appropriately the first time. Be careful when handling the antenna itself as it can get pulled or damaged from rough handling. Now that you have mounted the antenna, place the antenna back onto the car and route the wire to the back of the car stereo and connect the DAB aerial.
