Its always good to set your gain on your car amp for your subs to ensure that you get the cleanest sound possible out of your car audio system. This is because if its set incorrectly you can run into problems such as distortion or clipping very easily. Now at the shop we use special tools to tune the car amp gain, things such as a multimeter are required but not necessarily always the case. You can also tune a car amp by ear very accurately and its something that you at home in your driveway can do yourself. The things that you will need to turn your car amp by ear is a flat head screwdriver and it will be ideal to burn a 40HZ test tone track on a CD for optimal tuning and precision.
1) Turn all the equalizer settings to flat.
2) Insert the basstest tone CD and play the 40HZ track.
3) Play the 40HZ tone. Now head back to the amp and find the gain control. Turn it so that its set half way.
4) Now go back to the car stereo and gradually increase the volume until you notice a reduction in the sound quality. As soon as you hear any kind of distortion from your sub, turn down the volume by one level on the car stereo until its goes away.
5) So now that you have worked out the maximum volume your car radio distorts at, you will now need to tune the car amp gain. So head back to the car amp and using a flat head screwdriver slowly increase the adjustable dial stop going up when you hear distortion.
6) Now that you have tuned your car amp gain by ear, you can insert your favourite rap CD and blast some bass down the block.
