How To Break In a Brand New Car Subwoofer



When every you purchase a brand new car subwoofer from an audio shop, the mechcanical parts such as the rubber surround and spider will be really stiff. Out of the box, most need opening up before they reach to there full bass potential. From personal experience from over 20 years of experimenting with different eqiupment, its best to break in any car subwoofer regardless if its brand new and has never been used before in any setup. There are different ways you can do this that all have there own advantages, but this one is the way to do it properly. The ways provided today for you is the best that has worked for achieving maximum SPL and cone excursion for competitions and street shows.

In general it takes around 2-3 months for a subwoofer to break in properly. However, you can speed this process up and reduce it to a couple of hours all in the same day. So here is the full subwoofer break in procedure:

1) Ensure that the car amplifier and stereo provide a clipping distoration free signal, as you don't want to damage the voice coils on the speaker.

2) Burn a 30HZ test tone on a Blank CD.

3) Play the track on maximum volume before clipping for 2 hours. In between each 30 minutes allow a 30 second break to all the coils to cool down to prevent any kind of overheating occuring.
