How To Professionally Fit Speaker Terminal Cups On Subwoofer Box

Speaker terminals are a great way to provide quick access to the connections because you can quickly unscrew the wires and remove the box from your car. You can buy speaker terminals cups cheaply from shops such as radio shack or best buy. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes to suit your custom type of preferences in the workshop. Now you need to know the proper way to install speaker terminal cups into your MDF enclosure. I have personally witnessed air leakage around the terminal cup from a friends 2 12 Kenwood installed a few years ago in a Nissan 300zx. Air leaks cause a valuable loss in SPL and it sounds like air is rushing out when the bass notes are heard. I have just done a custom box for my JL audio W7 and required to fit a speaker terminal faceplate. So today you will learn how to fit a speaker terminal cup without causing any airleaks and damaged to the wood work.

1) Using a felt tip marker, draw out the inner diameter of the speaker terminal cup on the wood.

2) Get a jigsaw and cut out the shape you have constructed in the markings you have made earlier on.

3) Get sandpaper to smooth down the edges of the rough wood that has just be cut.

4) Attach the speaker wires with correct polarity onto the back of the speaker terminal cup. The best way to ensure secure down the connections is to solder them on. Spade terminals could easily come off from the strong vibrations created by large subwoofers causing disconnection issues later on.

5) Place the terminal cup into the slot you have created. Mark up the screw holes, drill into them and insert screws and secure down the module.

6) In terms of overcoming speaker terminal cup air leaks, you can go inside the box and run silicon around the edges of the plastic. In order to do this you will need to remove the subwoofer from the enclosure so you can get to the back of the terminal cup. Please be aware if you do this, you will need to wait 24 hours for the silicon to dry up before reinserting the subwoofer back in. Failure to do so could result in the subwoofer rubber parts to get damaged as they will become really stiff.
