Speaker grills are placed on top of the cone to protect it from getting damaged. For example, if the speaker doesn't have a protective grill, then somebody who steps in your car possibly could kick it accidentally and push in the middle dust cap. Now you can make your own metal mesh speaker grills at home if you are doing a custom install. The best thing about doing this is you can choose your mesh design and the color of the fabric.
1) Place the speaker onto MDF wood and sketch up a line around the outer diameter. Do the same for the inner diameter as well.
2) What you have just marked up on the wood cut it out using a jigsaw.
3) So now you should have something similar looking like a donut shape. Place the speaker grill cloth around the grill.
4) Flip it over and staple down the different parts of the cloth ontop the back. You could also use spray on glue adhesive as an great alternative.
5) All you need to do is drill screw holes for the speaker cover.
