How To Connect a Car Amplifier To a Home Computer (PC) Or Laptop

Do you have an car amplifier laying around your house and have no car, but have an computer or laptop and want to use that amp, to power an car subwoofer or speakers?

Well, let me tell you it is possible, first you will need a power supply, that can deliver a constant 12volts current to the car amp, so you can use a computer power supply, from an old computer, or buy one from an garage sale or use a psu that is used to power a CB radio, that is about 20 amps, they all as good as each other for powering the amp up.

You  will also need a wiring kit, that is compatible with the car amp your want to power, this is by purchasing a wiring kit that handles the same amount of rms watts the amp can produce, to ensure that the car amp gains enough current. An installation kit contains all the wires and bits that are required in order to connect your amp to your computer, speakers and psu. Most good amplifier wiring kits, from good car audio retailers, include, a power cable, which is red, used to connect the amp to the positive (+) terminal on the car battery. It will include a black cable, which is used to ground the car amp, to the car's metal bodywork. Include a rca cables, to send sound input signal to the amp, along with a remote turn on wire, that is connected to the remote wire on your car head unit, to tell the car amp to turn on, when the stereo is powered on.

Once you have a wiring kit, then you will need to use the power and ground wires, to hook up the car amp to an power supply. If you are going to use a computer power supply, as the source of power, then make sure it is at least a minimum of 250 watts, so it can provide enough amps to the amp, when the amplifier is at its full volume level potential.

If using a computer power supply unit:

1) Every power supply has different pinouts, however most people have an atx psu, which is simple to turn on. On the connector, you will need to use an short sized wire to jumper pin 14 (green) and pin 15 black, to trick the power supply, that the connector is plugged into a PC motherboard and force it to turn on and operate.

2) Next access the power wire, (red colour) and get an correct size and shaped screwdriver and using it, unscrew the screw, that is on the 12v terminal on the amp, along with that terminal there will be a remote and ground.

3) Insert the power wire's braid into the terminal, make sure the braid is completely in, then using your screwdriver, start to screw the screw tight. Ok, so the power cable is secure and safe, know you need to connect it to the 12 volt rail on the psu.

4) Look at the psu connector, it will have an yellow wire, that wire is the 12 volt line, using a 'wire cutter', snap off the wire in the middle, so the wire is easily exposed to making connections, make sure you don't cut the wire at the beginning, because if you want to use the psu, for an computer, you can simple reconnect the wire you disconnected.

5) OK, once you have found that wire, using a 'wire stripper', remove a sensible amount of insulation coating from the wire, i say about 1 cm, will do nicely. Then connect the power wire, that you connected to the car amp earlier on, and snap off the terminal, as you are not going to connect it onto a car battery post. Then use your wire stripper, to strip of the plastic insulation coating off the power cable.

6) Then grab hold of the braid from the yellow wire and the braid from the red colour power cable and twist both copper braids together, to create an durable connection. Once the connection is made, tear off some pvc insulation tape and using it, cover up the exposed braid, to prevent an short circuit to happen.

7) Next access the black colour wire, from the wiring kit, which is the ground wire, to ground the amp.
and using the same screwdriver you used earlier on, unscrew the screw, that is on the ground, also know as 'GND' terminal on the amp, along with that terminal there will be a remote and 12 V.

8) Once you have done that, insert the ground wire's braid, into the ground terminal, making sure the braid is fully inside the hole, to ensure an durable and secure electrical connection. Then using your screwdriver, screw the screw tight.

9 ) Then look at the psu connector, you will need to find an ground wire, it is always coloured 'black', so it should be easy to identify it and locate it. You notice that you will see more than 2 ground wires, don't worry though that is normal, they are all ground wires, so pick any from the bunch!  Once you have found an suitable ground wire, using a 'wire cutter' cut it in the middle, like you did with the yellow wire earlier on.

10 ) Then using a 'wire stripper' remove about 1cm off insulation coating from the wire, to expose the copper braid. Then use your 'wire cutter' to snap of the ring terminal on the ground lead, and then use an 'wire stripper' to expose new braid'. Once you have done that, then grab hold of the braid from the grond wire from the psu and the braid from the ground wire connected to the car amplifier and twist them together, until they bond.

11 )Then rip off an sensible amount of insulation tape from the roll and using it, tape up the exposed braid. Make sure you tape it properly and ensure that the area is covered in it, to prevent tiny strands of braid getting exposed.

  1. Where do I connect the remote wire from the amplifier?

  2. So I have an old notebook charging cord from an older laptop. Would this work the same as a psu or power inverter?
