How To Install a Small Car Subwoofer in Back Rear Parcel Shelf

If you are after more bass in your car and still want trunk space, you can install a small car subwoofer into the rear parcel shelf. Most people would install 6x9s, however installing a tiny 8 or 10 inch  subwoofer will provide more cone area resulting in more bass. In my own opinion fitting a sub in the parcel shelf will not sound as good as a custom made box that that is made to spec. But you will still gain more bass than you can get without having a subwoofer and you still have full space in the back for a push chair. Now using the existing parcel shelf will not work purely because its not strong enough to hold the weight of the subwoofer magnet. It will eventually sink in the middle and will rattle like crazy, so its best to create a simple stealth shelf made from MDF. This will house your subwoofer on a strong platform and will ensure that it wont fall down at some given point. The best wood to use would be regular 3/4 inch MDF that is commonly used in making car and home speaker cabinets.

1) Remove the current parcel shelf from your car and place it directly down onto the MDF wood so that its flat. Using a marker pen draw around it so that you copy its shape creating a template.

2) Ok so now that you have the shape drawn out, use a jigsaw cutter to cut out the shape from the marked up wood.

3) Measure the diameter of the speaker and draw out its outer circle. Once you have marked it up, again using the jigsaw cut out the shape of the sub.

4) Place the subwoofer into the hole. Drill out the screw holes and insert screws to securely mount it onto the MDF wood.

5) So now that you have the cut outs you will need apply some speaker fabric cloth that matches the interior. This will make it look clean, stealthy, professional and also nobody from the outside looking through your window can tell that you have a sub installed into the rear parcel shelf. The material itself can be applied using speaker cloth glue, its a spray on adhesive that comes in a can.

6) Once the glue had dried, you are now ready to fit the parcel shelf into the rear of your car. Connect speaker wire onto the terminals on the subwoofer and for best performance connect it to a mono block amplifier or a 2 channel amp that is bridged for more power.
